The Gastroenterology Department (SpleenStomach Diseases Department) of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine was established under the leadership of Zhang Zesheng, a renowned TCM expert, one of the first doctoral supervisors approved by the State Council,a distinguished representative of the Menghe Medical School in Jiangsu. Guided by successive eminent experts, including National Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine Xu Jingfan, National Renowned TCM Physicians Liu ShenlinShan Zhaowei,Qihuang Scholar Professor Shen Hong, the department has evolveda national high-level key discipline of TCM, a National Health Commission Clinical Key Specialty, a National TCM Advantage Specialty, the National East China Regional TCM (SpleenStomach Diseases) DiagnosisTreatment Center,a National TCM Clinical Research Base for SpleenStomach Diseases. It is also recognized as the Jiangsu Provincial Medical Innovation Center for TCM Digestive Diseases, Jiangsu Provincial TCM SpleenStomach Diseases Quality Control Center, Jiangsu Provincial Clinical Research Center for TCM Digestive Diseases,a Key Medical Discipline of Jiangsu Province.

The department currently operates 22 independent consultation rooms across the main hospitalZidong branch campuses, with 115 inpatient beds,houses the Digestive Diseases Institute under the Clinical Research Academy. The team consists of 35 physicians, including 1 National Master of TCM, 2 National Renowned TCM Physicians, 1 Qihuang Scholar, 3 National Mentors for Inheriting Academic Experience of Senior TCM Experts, 3 experts receiving the State Council Special Allowance, 5 Jiangsu Provincial Renowned TCM Physicians, 6 National Outstanding TCM Clinical Talents, 2 National TCM Clinical Specialized Technique Inheritance Backbone Talents, 4 Jiangsu Provincial “333 Project” Talents,5 Jiangsu Provincial “Six Talent Peaks” Scholars. The department also includes 5 doctoral supervisors11 master’s supervisors.

For decades, the department has inherited the academic traditions of Jiangsu’s MengheWu Medical Schools, integrating distinctive TCM characteristics with modern medical practices. It has established a comprehensive medical service model encompassing specialized disease diagnosistreatment, chronic disease management, rehabilitation with unique techniques,multidisciplinary integrated care. The department excels in leveraging TCM advantages for preventing the progression of atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasiainflammation-cancer transformation, managing functional gastrointestinal overlap syndromes, preventing colorectal polypsadenomas, supporting post-operative cancer patients with immune-boosting therapies,addressing spleen deficiency syndromes. It also demonstrates strengths in integrated Chinese-Western approaches for inducingmaintaining remission in inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)treating refractory Helicobacter pylori infections. The department is distinguished for its expertise in autoimmune liver injury, autoimmune gastritis,unexplained small intestinal ulcers, with particularly prominent national influence in the integrated management of inflammatory bowel diseases. The department has developed 18 specialized hospital preparations, including Renshu Jianwei Granules (Benevolence Stomach-Strengthening Granules), Qingyou Yangwei Capsules (Stomach-Nourishing Capsules for Clearing Pathogens), and Wenpi Shichang Granules (Spleen-WarmingIntestine-Stabilizing Granules).

The department holds a leading academic position in China, serving as the chair unit of the Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine SpleenStomach Diseases Branch of the China Association for Promotion of Health International Exchangethe vice-chair unit of the SpleenStomach Diseases Branch of the Chinese Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 20222023, it was consecutively ranked 2nd in the TCM Hospital SpleenStomach Diseases Discipline in China, with its clinical volumetechnical expertise maintaining a nationally leading position.
