Department Scale
The Department of Orthopedics at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1956 by Professor Zhu Fangshou, who also served as its first director. In 1987, it was granted a masters degree program, followed by the establishment of a doctoral program in integrated ChineseWestern medicine in 1999,a Chinese medicine orthopedic doctoral program in 2001. In 2011, the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine Orthopedic Research Institute was established. Under the leadership of successive department directors, it has growna high-level department integrating clinical care, teaching,research.

The department is now recognized as a National TCM Specialty, a key discipline of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a Jiangsu Provincial Key TCM Specialty,a leading institution in various related fields. It serves as the chair unit of the Jiangsu Provincial Orthopedic Branch of the TCM Society, the chair unit of the Sports Medicine Branch of the China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the teachingresearch office for TCM Orthopedics at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicines First Clinical Medical College,the postdoctoral research station for TCM Orthopedics, focusing on knee osteoarthritis research.

Other accolades include being named the Jiangsu Provincial TCM Knee Osteoarthritis Rehabilitation Demonstration Center, the Jiangsu Provincial Grassroots Specialty Department Incubation Center,the Jiangsu Provincial TCM Orthopedic Quality Control Center’s lead unit. The department is also a pilot hospital for accelerated rehabilitation surgery in orthopedics,part of the National Bone CirculationOsteonecrosis DiagnosisTreatment Alliance. It is also home to the Trauma Orthopedic ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) Demonstration Wardthe Shi Xiaoshan Trauma Academic Alliance.

The department has 3 academic inheritance studios for national renowned TCM orthopedic experts such as Zhu Fangshou, Zhou Fuyi,Huang Guicheng,2 for provincial renowned experts like Zhou FuyiXu Jianan. Currently, the department covers five main specialties: Trauma, Spine, Joints, Sports Medicine,Bone Tumors. It operates 5 wards with a total of 192 beds.

Specialized Diseases DiagnosisTreatment
The department specializes in 6 key conditions, including femoral intertrochanteric fractures, patellar fractures, ankle fractures, femoral head necrosis, osteoarthritis of the knee,lumbar disc herniation. For each of these conditions, the department has developed comprehensive, effective,safe treatment protocols. These treatment plans are updated every 1-2 years based on clinical experienceadvancements, with plans to expand to more specialized treatment options for additional conditions in the future.

Distinctive Advantages

The orthopedic trauma treatment team, led by Director Wang PeiminDirector Mao Jun, is skilled in performing a variety of procedures for both childrenadults, including bone fractures, replantation of severed fingerslimbs, minimally invasive correction of limb deformities,post-trauma sequelae repair. Their expertise includes using the Ilizarov technique to treat bone infections, bone defects,diabetic foot, combining external fixation with VSD technology for complex trauma sequelae,using MIPPO combined with 3D printing for complex fractures.

The spine treatment team, headed by Directors Chen GangLi Kaihua, specializes in various spine surgeries. This includes OLIF/XLIF lumbar lateral minimally invasive fusion techniques, occipitocervicalatlantoaxial fracture-dislocation fusion techniques, MIS-ALIF anterior lumbar minimally invasive fusion, cervicallumbar artificial disc replacement, adult kyphosis osteotomy correction, spinal endoscopymicroscope-assisted decompression, endoscopic fusion techniques,disc low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation.

The joint treatment team, led by Director Shen Jirong, focuses on staged treatment for femoral head necrosisknee osteoarthritis,TCM integration for developmental dysplasia of the hip. They offer individualized, step-by-step treatments to preserve the hipknee,are proficient in performing hip, knee,elbow joint replacement surgeries. They also pioneered minimally invasive DAA (direct anterior approach) total hip arthroplasty in the province.

Under the leadership of Director Sun Luning, the sports medicine team has made rapid advancements in arthroscopic surgeries for the shoulder, hip, knee,ankle. They routinely perform procedures such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, MPFL double L-shaped tunnel reconstruction for patellar dislocation, Comprehensive Mini reverse shoulder arthroplasty, minimally invasive ligamenttendon repairreconstruction,cartilagemeniscus transplantation.

The bone tumor treatment team, led by Director Zhang Xingquan, regularly conducts surgeries such as microwave ablation of bone tumors with antenna in situ, resection of large soft tissue tumors, joint tumor resection with joint reconstruction,functional reconstruction of nerve damage.

The department has received several prestigious awards, including the Second Prize of Jiangsu Province ScienceTechnology Progress Award, the First Prize of Jiangsu Province Traditional Chinese Medicine ScienceTechnology Award,the First PrizeTwo Second Prizes from the China Association for the Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
