The Emergency Department of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine was established in 1963. After more than 60 years of development, it has become an independent first-level specialty integrating clinical practice, teaching,scientific research. Currently, the department has 136 medical staff, including 29 physicians, among whom are 7 chief physicians, 8 associate chief physicians, 2 doctoral supervisors,6 masters supervisors. The department maintains a balanced ratio of traditional ChineseWestern medicine practitioners, with a high proportion of youngmiddle-aged professionals, indicating strong potential for future growth.
The Emergency Department operates across two main areas: the main hospitalthe Zidong branch. It is equipped with a comprehensive emergency medical service system, including a 120 emergency substation, emergency resuscitation rooms, emergency consultation rooms, emergency wards,an EICU (Emergency Intensive Care Unit). The department covers various specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, encephalopathy, orthopedics, pediatrics, gynecology, ophthalmology,otolaryngology. It is recognized as a provincial chest pain center, provincial stroke center,municipal trauma center,is also a national-level stroke center under construction.
The department routinely performs advanced diagnostictherapeutic techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, invasive/non-invasive mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, bedside emergency ultrasound, bedside fiberoptic bronchoscopy, emergency endoscopy, emergency interventional procedures, blood purification,extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). With an annual patient volume of approximately 450,000 visits, the department demonstrates exceptional emergency response capabilitiesranks first among traditional Chinese medicine systems.
Specialized Diseases DiagnosisTreatment
The department maintains stable research focuses in several areas, including the "Exterior-ReleasingQi-Clearing Method" for treating exogenous fever, the "Qi-TonifyingYin-Nourishing Method" for severe pneumonia, the "Yang-UnblockingObstruction-Dispersing Method" for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD),the organ function protection in sepsis using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Notably, research on the "Yang-UnblockingObstruction-Dispersing Method" for AECOPD has been awarded the Jiangsu ProvincialNanjing Municipal ScienceTechnology Progress Prizes, as well as the Third Prize of the China TCM ScienceTechnology Award. Additionally, studies on TCM-based diagnosistreatment techniques for persistent vegetative states have received the Jiangsu Provincial ScienceTechnology Progress Prizethe Second Prize of the China Association of Chinese Medicine ScienceTechnology Award.
The departments proprietary TCM preparation, "Qianghuo Qushi Qingwen Mixture," has played a significant role in the preventiontreatment of COVID-19. It has also secured multiple national-level research projects on TCM interventions for COVID-19 prevention, treatment,rehabilitation. The academic achievements of the department in the field of warm disease preventiontreatment have gained recognition from peers both withinoutside Jiangsu Province.

In 1995, the department was approved by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine as one of the first "TCM Emergency Centers" in China. In 2007, it was recognized as a key construction unit for the National TCM Emergency Base by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2012, it was designated as a key specialty by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicineappointed as the leading unit of the National Collaborative Group for Exogenous FeverAcute Cough. In 2013, it was awarded the title of Key Clinical Discipline in TCM Emergency by the Jiangsu Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Currently, the department holds several prestigious positions, including Vice-Chair of the Chinese TCM Emergency Medical Alliance, Vice-Chair of the Emergency Branch of the China Association for the Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Vice-Chair of the Yangtze River Delta TCM Emergency Quality Control Center, Chair of the Jiangsu Provincial TCM Emergency Medical Alliance, Chair of the Jiangsu Provincial TCM Emergency Quality Control Center, Chair of the TCM Sub-center of the Jiangsu Provincial Emergency Medicine Quality Control Center, Vice-Chair of the Emergency Branch of the Jiangsu Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Vice-Chair of the Emergency Branch of the Jiangsu Association of Integrated Traditional ChineseWestern Medicine,Vice-Chair of the Emergency Medicine Committee of the Jiangsu Research Hospital Association.
In the 2023 evaluation of academic influence among TCM hospital disciplines (specialties), the department ranked 8th nationally6th in the "Aliy" TCM Hospital Emergency Medicine Benchmark Ranking, securing the top position in Jiangsu Provincedemonstrating significant academic influence. Over the past five years, the department has undertaken 8 nationalprovincial-level research projects, published over 110 papers in core journals,more than 10 SCI-indexed papers.
As a key center for mastersdoctoral programs in integrated traditional ChineseWestern medicine emergency medicine at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, the department is also a major training base for resident physiciansyoung doctors at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It offers over 200 hours of undergraduate teaching annually for Nanjing University of Chinese Medicinetrains more than 200 resident, intern,visiting physicians each year. Additionally, the department has contributed as a co-editor to the national "13th Five-Year Plan""14th Five-Year Plan" TCM higher education textbooks, comprehensively advancing the academic development of the specialty.
