Under the consistent supportattention of successive hospital leaders, the General Surgery Department of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine has developeda specialized department with distinct TCM characteristics, advanced surgical techniques, a rational professional team,standardized diagnostictreatment protocols. Its comprehensive strength in medical care, teaching,research is leading among similar TCM hospitals nationwide. In 2007, it was recognized as a Key Clinical Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jiangsu Province,in 2011, it became a National Key Clinical Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2022, TCM Surgery was designated as a Key Discipline in Jiangsu Province. The department currently serves as the vice-chairman unit of the Surgical Branch of the Chinese Association of Traditional Chinese Medicinethe chairman unit of the Surgical Branch of the Jiangsu Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The department is currently dividedthree sub-specialties: "Integrated ChineseWestern Medicine Thyroid Surgery," "Integrated ChineseWestern Medicine GastrointestinalBariatric Metabolic Surgery,""Integrated ChineseWestern Medicine Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic,Hernia Surgery." It offers multidisciplinary team (MDT) therapy for thyroid nodules, obesity,metabolic diseases. The department routinely performs radical surgeries for thyroid malignancies, laparoscopic radical surgeries for gastrointestinal tumors, laparoscopic surgeries for liver, biliary, pancreatic,splenic diseases,laparoscopic tension-free hernia repairs. Since 2019, the department has introducedperformed Da Vinci robotic surgeries, now routinely conducting robotic surgeries for malignant tumors of the rectum, colon,stomach. Outpatient services include specialized clinics for thyroid, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, splenic,abdominal wall hernia conditions. The department handles nearly 140,000 outpatient visits annually, admits over 8,000 inpatients,performs 5,000 surgeries each year, with over 95% being Grade IIIIV surgeries.
