Under the consistent supportattention of successive hospital leaders, the General Surgery Department of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine has developeda specialized department with distinct TCM characteristics, advanced surgical techniques, a rational professional team,standardized diagnostictreatment protocols. Its comprehensive strength in medical care, teaching,research is leading among similar TCM hospitals nationwide. In 2007, it was recognized as a Key Clinical Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jiangsu Province,in 2011, it became a National Key Clinical Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2022, TCM Surgery was designated as a Key Discipline in Jiangsu Province. The department currently serves as the vice-chairman unit of the Surgical Branch of the Chinese Association of Traditional Chinese Medicinethe chairman unit of the Surgical Branch of the Jiangsu Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 

The department boasts 3 renowned TCM experts in Jiangsu Province, 1 expert receiving the State Council Special Allowance, 2 national mentors for the academic experience inheritance of senior TCM experts,2 national studios for the inherit of renowned senior TCM experts. The department comprises 18 chief physicians (professors), 12 associate chief physicians (associate professors), 12 attending physicians (lecturers),8 resident physicians. Among them, 15 hold doctoral degrees,37 hold masters degrees. The department includes 3 doctoral supervisors9 masters supervisors, forming a highly skilledacademically accomplished team with a rational talent team. The discipline is composed of inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, emergency services,teachingresearch offices, spanning two campuses: the main hospitalthe Zidong branch. The main hospital has 3 inpatient wards, while the Zidong branch has 1, totaling 160 beds.

The department is currently dividedthree sub-specialties: "Integrated ChineseWestern Medicine Thyroid Surgery," "Integrated ChineseWestern Medicine GastrointestinalBariatric Metabolic Surgery,""Integrated ChineseWestern Medicine Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic,Hernia Surgery." It offers multidisciplinary team (MDT) therapy for thyroid nodules, obesity,metabolic diseases. The department routinely performs radical surgeries for thyroid malignancies, laparoscopic radical surgeries for gastrointestinal tumors, laparoscopic surgeries for liver, biliary, pancreatic,splenic diseases,laparoscopic tension-free hernia repairs. Since 2019, the department has introducedperformed Da Vinci robotic surgeries, now routinely conducting robotic surgeries for malignant tumors of the rectum, colon,stomach. Outpatient services include specialized clinics for thyroid, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, splenic,abdominal wall hernia conditions. The department handles nearly 140,000 outpatient visits annually, admits over 8,000 inpatients,performs 5,000 surgeries each year, with over 95% being Grade IIIIV surgeries.

The department currently oversees 5 National Natural Science Foundation projectsmore than 10 provincial-level research projects. It has editedco-edited 18 academic monographshas received 6 Jiangsu Provincial TCM ScienceTechnology Awards, 1 Jiangsu Provincial Health Commission Medical New Technology Introduction Award, 1 China Association of Integrative Medicine ScienceTechnology Award,1 Jiangsu Provincial Medical New Technology Introduction Award. The department holds 4 patentshas successfully transformed one hospital preparation (Chuangling Liquid)clinical application, while developing three new hospital preparations, including Yiyi Mixture, Jiedu Lishi Mixture,Jiedu Xiaozhong Mixture.

The department emphasizes the advantages of integrating ChineseWestern medicine, applying traditional TCM diagnostictreatment features alongside modern surgical techniques. It utilizes 18 hospital preparations widely in clinical practice, such as Chuangling Liquid, Jiawei Nuanqi Powder, Qingfu Ointment,Yiyi Mixture. The department highlights the application of TCM in the perioperative period, combining modern minimally invasiverobotic technologies with TCM to create optimal conditions for surgerypromote postoperative recovery.
