Established in 1958, the Ophthalmology Department of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine has evolved through decades of dedicationinnovationa comprehensive, high-tech,multidisciplinary ophthalmology center that integrates Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) characteristics with cutting-edge modern medical technologiespractices.
The department is recognized as a Key Specialty by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a Key Discipline and Model Key Specialty by the Jiangsu Provincial Administration of TCM. It serves as the chair unit of the Ophthalmology Committee of the Jiangsu Association of TCMthe Photon Biomedicine Committee of the Jiangsu Optical Society, as well as the vice-chair unit of the Ophthalmology Committee of the Jiangsu Association of Integrated ChineseWestern Medicine. Additionally, it is a doctoralmaster’s training site for TCMintegrated ophthalmology,a master’s training site for optometry at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine.
Adhering to the principle of "Equal Emphasis on ChineseWestern Medicine," the department combines traditional TCM therapies with modern medical advancements. It has enricheddeveloped the TCM diagnostic system for fundus diseases, conducting extensive clinicalbasic research on diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, optic neuritis, uveitis,central serous chorioretinopathy. The department established the Clinical Medical Center for Age-Related Macular Degeneration, achieving significant outcomes through integrated TCM-Western treatments. It also operates a Dry Eye Clinic that integrates acupuncture, herbal fumigation,OPT laser therapy, alongside specialized pediatric ophthalmologyoptometry clinics employing TCM external therapies, leading in the integrated management of adolescent myopia. The "Master Optometry" multidisciplinary clinic provides expert consultations for complex eye conditions.
The department actively adopts international advancements, pioneering technologies in JiangsuEast China, including PDT (Photodynamic Therapy) and TTT (Transpupillary Thermotherapy), multifocal toric intraocular lens implantation for refractive cataract surgery, LASIK, small-incision all-femtosecond laser myopia correction,minimally invasive wide-angle vitreoretinalmacular surgeries. Other routine procedures include anti-VEGF therapy, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, phacoemulsification, ICL implantation, glaucoma drainage device implantation, strabismus correction (routinecomplex), retrograde lacrimal intubation, endoscopic nasal surgery, orbital tumor resection, complex orbital fracture repair,oculoplasticaesthetic surgeries.
Equipped with first-class diagnostic imaging technology, the department leads in Jiangsu with its "Image Reading Clinic" and advanced instruments such as non-mydriatic fundus cameras, visual electrophysiology systems, confocal corneal microscopes, confocal laser scanning ophthalmoscopes, visual field analyzers, OCT/OCTA, A/B-scan ultrasound, UBM (Ultrasound Biomicroscopy), FFA (Fundus Fluorescein Angiography), ICG (Indocyanine Green Angiography),Pentacam anterior segment analyzers.
The department boasts a highly respected expert team, including 15 Chief Physicians, 5 Associate Chief Physicians, and 1 Jiangsu Provincial Renowned TCM Physician, with 15 holding doctoral degrees6 holding master’s degrees. It includes 5 doctoral supervisors and 3 master’s supervisors. Over the past five years, the department has completed over 10 nationalprovincial research projects, earning 1 First Prize and 1 Third Prize in the Jiangsu Provincial TCM ScienceTechnology Progress Awards.
Committed to innovation, the department has developed proprietary hospital preparations such as Zengshi Fuyao (Vision-Enhancing External Medicine) and Yishi Mixture (Vision-Benefiting Herbal Blend), further solidifying its role as a leader in integrated TCM-Western ophthalmology.
