Department Scale
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine was established in October 1993became an independent discipline in 2002. Currently, the department operates two ICU wards in the SouthNorth campuses, with a total of 23 open beds. The medical team consists of 20 doctors, including 5 chief physicians, 8 associate chief physicians, 3 attending physicians, and 4 resident physicians. Among them, 10 hold doctoral degrees, 9 hold masters degrees, and 1 holds a dual bachelors degree. The department also includes 2 doctoral supervisors and 8 masters supervisors. The nursing team comprises 69 nurses, including 2 associate chief nurses, 51 senior nurses, and 16 junior nurses. Among them, 48 hold bachelors degrees and 2 hold masters degrees. The team includes 2 national critical care specialist nurses, 4 provincial specialist nurses, 1 municipal specialist nurse, and 3 part-time TCM therapists.
The department is equipped with advanced medical devices, including 25 invasive ventilators, 12 non-invasive ventilators, 6 bedside hemofiltration machines, 2 blood gas analyzers, ECMO, PiCCO, bronchoscopes, ultrasound machines, defibrillators, multifunctional sputum drainage machines, cough assist devices, and pneumatic compression therapy devices.
Specialized Diseases DiagnosisTreatment
The department focuses on "sepsis" as its primary research directionhas developed TCM-based clinical pathways for key conditions. These include: "Chuanbing" (Severe Pneumonia), "Baochuan" (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, ARDS), "Fuzhangmanbing" (Sepsis-induced Gastrointestinal Dysfunction, Abdominal Infections,Acute Severe Pancreatitis). In addition, the department specializes in the integrated TCM-Western medicine treatment of critical conditions such as shock, sepsis, acute severe pancreatitis, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, pulmonary edema, renal failure, liver failure, perioperative care, multiple trauma, trauma/burns, and cardiopulmonary arrest.
Adhering to the principle of "equal emphasis on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine", the department employs TCM-specific therapies in critical care. By integrating TCM theories with modern medicine, it utilizes oral/nasogastric/rectal administration of herbal medicines alongside techniques such as moxibustion, acupoint application, bloodletting therapy, and auricular seed embedding.
Scientific Research
The department has undertaken over 10 nationalprovincial research projects and 25 municipal-level projects, including 8 National Natural Science Foundation projects (such as generalyouth programs) and 3 Jiangsu Provincial ScienceTechnology Department projects (including provincial natural science funds). It has also completed 25 projects funded by the Jiangsu Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The team has published over 100 research papers, including 80+ in Chinese core journals and 35 SCI-indexed papers,holds 4 national patents. Additionally, the department has contributed to the compilation of 2 textbooks, including the "12th Five-Year Plan" textbook EmergencyCritical Care in TCM (as editorial board members)the "13th Five-Year Plan" textbook Clinical Research in Integrated Critical Care Medicine (as associate editors).

The Department of Critical Care Medicine is recognized as a "12th Five-Year Plan" Key TCM Specialty Cultivation Unit by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and serves as the leading unit for the TCM diagnosistreatment protocol for "sepsis-induced blood disorders", a key disease under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2019, it was appointed as the Executive Council Unit of the Jiangsu Critical Care Physicians Alliance and the Deputy Director Unit of the Jiangsu Medical Association Critical Care Quality Control Committee. In 2022, the department was awarded the "Heroic Womens Post" title by the Nanjing Federation of Trade Unions. It also ranked 4th in the Aliyapai "2022 TCM Hospital Critical Care Medicine Rankings".
