The Pediatrics Department of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine comprises inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, emergency room, teachingresearch offices,the Pediatrics Research Institute. It currently has 61 approved beds, 20 outpatient consulting rooms,4 treatment rooms. The department is equipped with specialized diagnostictreatment devices, including pulmonary function testing equipment, exhaled nitric oxide analyzers, ultrasonic pulse conduction therapy devices, traditional Chinese medicine fumigation therapy devices,sleep respiration monitors.

The department follows the academic legacy of Jiang Yuren, a renowned master of traditional Chinese pediatrics,has flourished through the relentless effortsdedication of several generations. Numerous renowned physiciansmentors have been fostered through here. Currently, the department boasts 1 nationally recognized traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) master, 2 TCM masters of Jiangsu Province, 1 expert receiving the State Council Special Allowance, 2 national TCM clinical talents, 3 talents from Jiangsu Provincial 333 Project, 2 talents from Jiangsu Provincial "Six Talent Peaks" project,1 leading TCM talent in Jiangsu Province.

The department now owns 32 active physicians, including 19 with doctoral degrees, 13 with master’s degrees, 5 doctoral supervisors,5 master’s supervisors. It leads the nation in both academic researchclinical practice, providing high-quality TCM medical services for children.

Specialized Diseases DiagnosisTreatment

Since its establishment in 1954, the Pediatrics Department has undergone 70 years of continuous inheritanceinnovative development, forming four pediatric subspecialties: pulmonary diseases, spleen-related diseases, kidney-related diseases,heart-liver diseases in children. It has identified five advantageousdistinctive diseases: adenoid hypertrophy, pneumonia with wheezing, asthma, allergic purpura,short stature.

The department has established specialized outpatient clinics for adenoid hypertrophy, asthma, Tic disorder/ADHD, growthdevelopment (precocious puberty and short stature), anorexia, enuresis,purpura. It has developed 14 highly effective in-house proprietary medications7 formulated herbal pastes, completing the transformation of 5 proprietary medications.

With a strong focus on TCM characteristics, the department continues to enhance its specialized diagnostictreatment services. In 2024, the pediatric outpatientemergency services reached nearly 450,000 visits, with 38.8% of patients coming from outside the Nanjing region.

Distinctive Advantages

The department adheres to the principle of TCM as its foundation, highlighting the distinctive advantages of TCM treatments. A variety of specialized TCM external therapies are routinely conducted, including Winter Disease Treated in Summer, Xiaoxian Plasters, Yunpi Plasters, Sanjiu Plasters. In addition, some other TCM-based treatments are also provided, including acupuncture treating pediatric Tic disorder/ADHD, pediatric Tuina (massage), Tiaozhi therapy, etc.

AwardsAchievements

The department has been recognized as the National Regional TCM (Pediatrics) DiagnosisTreatment Center (East China), National TCM Key Specialty, the first batch of National Clinical Key Specialties by the Ministry of Health,National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine Key Specialty. It is also authorized as the Jiangsu Province Demonstration Key Specialty, Jiangsu Provincial TCM Key Specialty (Class I), the host unit of Jiangsu Provincial Pediatric TCM Quality Control Center, Specialized Department of National Clinical Pharmacology Research Base,Professional Department of National Continuing Education Base. Additionally, it serves as the chairing unit of the Pediatrics Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.

The department has undertaken 57 national-level projects, including those from the Ministry of ScienceTechnology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (General ProjectsYouth Projects),the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has also completed 20 provincial-level projects under the Jiangsu Provincial Department of ScienceTechnology49 bureau-level scientific research projects. Furthermore, it has developed 23 pediatric disease diagnosistreatment guidelinessix standards for TCM technical operations.

Since its establishment, the department has published over 1,400 academic papers, including more than 160 SCI-indexed articlesover 30 articles in journals ranked in the first quartile of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with the highest impact factor reaching 17.3. It has obtained 28 national patentsreceived over 30 scientifictechnological awards.

The department places great emphasis on the development of disciplines, courses,teaching teams. Pediatric Traditional Chinese Medicine has been recognized as a national key discipline. The course "Pediatric Traditional Chinese Medicine" has been rated as a national premium course,the teaching team has been designated as the national teaching team by the Ministry of Education.

As of April 2024, the department has trained 490 postgraduate students, including 77 doctoral students413 masters students. It has also authored and translated over 200 academic monographsparticipated in the compilation of more than 100 textbooks for higher medical institutions, such as Pediatric Traditional Chinese Medicine, Child Health Studies,Anthology of Pediatric MastersSchools.
