Department Scale

The Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine was established in the 1970s by Professor Zhou Zhongying, a National Renowned Master in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is one of the earliest cardiovascular specialty departments in the national TCM system. Currently, it is the only regional TCM cardiovascular diagnosistreatment center in East China under national construction. It is recognized as a high-level construction discipline by the National Administration of TCM, a key TCM discipline for cardiovascular diseases,a national key specialty for cardiovascular advantages. It also serves as the Jiangsu Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Cardiovascular Diseases in TCM, the Jiangsu Provincial Quality Control Center for TCM Cardiovascular Diseases, the National Key Clinical Laboratory for Hypertension under the National Administration of TCM. Additionally, it is the Jiangsu Provincial Clinical Medical Innovation Center for Hypertension in TCM. The department comprises 4 wards (including the Zidong campus) with 192 bedsis equipped with a Hypertension Research Institute. The department currently has 57 physicians, including 31 senior titles, among whom are 6 nationally renowned TCM experts, Qihuang scholars,provincial-level famous TCM doctors.

Specialized Diseases DiagnosisTreatment

The department has formed subspecialties centered around a doctoral team, including the Hypertension Research Institute (Hypertension Department), the Coronary Heart DiseaseInterventional DiagnosisTreatment Group, the Heart Failure Group, the ArrhythmiaElectrophysiologyPacemaker Group. It has developed TCM diagnosistreatment plansclinical pathways for advantageous diseases such as dizziness (hypertension), chest pain (coronary heart disease),heart failure (chronic heart failure). The department comprehensively performs modern diagnostictreatment technologies, including coronary intervention (left main disease, chronic total occlusion, bifurcation lesions, multi-vessel disease, other complex treatments), electrophysiological examinationsradiofrequency ablation (atrial fibrillation, complex ventricular arrhythmia ablation), pacemaker implantation (ICD, CRT/D),interventional treatments for congenital heart diseasestructural heart disease.

Distinctive Advantages

The department has over 10 characteristic in-house proprietary preparations, such as Qianyang Yuyin Granules, Pinggan Yishen Granules, Zhuoxue Qing Granules, Guanxin Ping, Yangxin Shumai Granules,Biaodouling Oral Liquid. The distinctive advantages include the following.

TCM-based Comprehensive PreventionTreatment of Hypertension. The department advocates the concept of "preventing disease before it occurs, preventing progression after onset, preventing deterioration after complications" in the TCM management of hypertension. It actively employs TCM treatments such as calming the liversuppressing yang as well as nourishing yinsuppressing yang to delay target organ damage caused by hypertension, with a particular focus on kidney damage. For patients with reduced glomerular filtration rate, proteinuria, hematuria due to hypertensive kidney damage, the department can improveeven reverse the extent of kidney damageenhance renal function.

TCM Intervention for Chronic Heart Failure. Based on the principle of "benefiting qi, warming yang, promoting blood circulation, excreting water," the department uses formulations such as Qiangxin MixtureYiqi Wenyang Decoction to significantly enhance guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) for heart failure patients. This approach further optimizes the integrated TCMwestern medicine treatment plan for chronic heart failure.

Psycho-Cardiology in Cardiovascular Disease Treatment. In addition to treating cardiovascular diseases, the department emphasizes the impact of psychologicalmental states on disease progression. Recognizing the prevalence of anxietydepression among chronic cardiovascular patients, it not only treats "heart disease" but also addresses "psychological disorders." By employing TCM methods such as calming the mindsoothing the liver, the department achieves dual "heart" treatment, improving clinical outcomes. The department took the lead on the development of the National Primary Hypertension PreventionManagement Guidelines 2020 and the Chinese Hypertension Guidelines 2024 (TCM section), marking the first inclusion of TCM content in these guidelines. It also spearheaded the Expert Consensus on Integrated TCMWestern Medicine DiagnosisTreatment of Psycho-Cardiology Diseases by the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine.

AwardsAchievements

In recent years, the department has received numerous provincialministerial awards, including the Jiangsu Provincial ScienceTechnology First Prize, the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine ScienceTechnology Second Prize, the Jiangsu Provincial TCM ScienceTechnology First Prize.
